Modernization of Learning Center Aleksandria:
Spaces for Contemporary Learning – Zero-Defect Delivery
Fira modernized the facilities of Learning Center Aleksandria, located in the center of Helsinki, to meet the changing needs of students and modern learning methods. The project was carried out in accordance with the sustainability and responsibility goals of the University of Helsinki and was completed in the spring of 2025. The project was handed over with zero defects – without a single error.

Functional Spaces for Changing Student Needs
The modernization improved the functionality, acoustics, and user experience of the facilities. The learning center received adaptable, multifunctional, and comfortable spaces that support various study styles and learning methods. Although the building was not yet at the end of its technical lifecycle, it was updated to meet current needs without extensive renovation – the previous major renovation was done in the early 2000s.
Disruption-Free Implementation on an Efficient Schedule
The project was carried out on a tight schedule, and disruptions to the construction site were minimized throughout the implementation. The use of neighboring properties was carefully considered – efforts were made to control noise, dust, and access routes from the planning stage. The construction site adhered to P1 cleanliness class requirements, and conditions were monitored in real-time by measuring, among other things, temperature, humidity, and quartz dust levels.
Designed Together with Students
The facilities were developed in close cooperation with students. New retreat and group spaces were built in the learning center to meet various study needs. The renovations were made to support both individual and group work in different situations. To improve comfort, acoustic plastering was done in the lobby area protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency, and the building services were renewed
Satisfied Users and a Modern Outcome
The completed Aleksandria offers students a safe, healthy, and functional learning environment that will serve well into the future. The renewed facilities were enthusiastically received: overall satisfaction rose to a score of 4.3/5, ease of use to 4.5/5, and the Net Promoter Score (NPS) of +55 indicated a successful outcome.
Zero-defect delivery was a great success,
said Anne Pitkänen, construction engineer at the University of Helsinki.
