DHL Bastukärr – towards carbon neutrality

In the spring of 2022, Fira and the global logistics leader DHL signed an agreement to construct a 44,000 square meter logistics center in Bastukärr, Sipoo. From the project’s inception, it required special expertise in solution development, both in optimizing the project and finding environmentally friendly solutions. DHL Bastukärr was developed from the start as a carbon-neutral building.

Environmentally friendly solutions

The environmental friendliness of DHL Bastukärr heavily relies on building technology. The property features a rainwater collection system, which is used for flushing toilets. Heating is provided by an extensive geothermal system, and lighting is implemented with LED fixtures. As a testament to its environmental friendliness, DHL’s Bastukärr logistics center was awarded the second-highest BREEAM environmental certification level, Excellent. The client set the certification requirements, and Fira cost-effectively integrated these requirements into the design and construction plans. Fira then managed the site to ensure the BREEAM requirements were met.

Focus on user training

To ensure that the building’s users have the necessary skills to operate the building technology, Fira developed user training sessions during the handover of the property. All training sessions were recorded and stored for future reference and training. This ensures the optimal use of the building’s systems throughout its lifecycle. The building was handed over in two phases, in the fall of 2023 and January 2024, about a month ahead of schedule.
