Rykmentinpuisto School and Daycare – Finland’s first lifecycle project with a five-star environmental rating.

Construction service company Fira and Caverion have delivered the Tuusula Rykmentinpuisto school and daycare as a lifecycle project, achieving a full five-star rating in Rakennustieto’s environmental classification – the first lifecycle project in Finland to do so.

The Environmental Classification by Rakennustieto is a tool designed for Finnish conditions. It guides construction and property maintenance according to sustainable development principles. An environmentally friendly building saves water and energy, reduces carbon emissions, and brings significant savings throughout its lifecycle. In addition, the classification also addresses aspects such as indoor air quality.

– The five-star rating was achieved mainly through a combination of strong project development, thorough pre-planning, smart design solutions, and high-quality execution by a skilled team. We have solid expertise in environmental responsibility, says Panu Pohjola, Director of Fira’s Commercial Construction Business.

In addition to Fira’s already high environmental process standards, extra efforts were made to meet the requirements of the environmental classification. This included ensuring compliance with the criteria, monitoring, and documentation. The lifecycle carbon footprint of Rykmentinpuisto is 20% lower than the reference value.

– Construction has a significant climate impact, and we have the ability to influence it. Caverion designs, implements, and provides technical building solutions to help customers achieve energy efficiency and climate goals. Ensuring the proper functioning of building systems during implementation plays a key role in meeting Rakennustieto’s environmental classification and in managing lifecycle costs and conditions, says Jani Orava, Business Manager at Caverion.

– The project, carried out by the same team, provided valuable lessons and new innovations that were applied in Rykmentinpuisto. In addition, the site and the entire project had active communication and smooth collaboration between all parties. Working together makes a big difference, says Jarkko Kella, Project Manager at Fira.

– We thank our client, the Municipality of Tuusula, and our partners Fira and Ramboll for excellent cooperation on this project. It is a great pleasure to achieve a shared goal that promotes better well-being for both the environment and people. We have previously delivered projects with a four-star environmental rating. This time, we set an ambitious goal to reach five stars. To achieve this, we went beyond standard practices and carried out lifecycle cost calculations and determined the building’s baseline energy consumption, says Tomi Nurminen, Project Development Manager at Caverion.

Fira acted as the main contractor for the Rykmentinpuisto school and daycare project, while Caverion was responsible for the design and implementation of building systems and will handle property maintenance and planned energy consumption for the next 20 years.

A campus of over 15,000 gross square meters for 1,200 children and students was built in Tuusula’s Rykmentinpuisto as a lifecycle project. It includes design and construction work as well as maintenance services for 20 years. Construction started in summer 2023, and the school opened in August 2025. The environmental classification audit was completed in November 2025.

Fira and Caverion’s previous joint lifecycle project, Stadin Vocational College in Myllypuro, achieved a four-star environmental rating.
